Apenas se sabía nada de él hasta la aparición de nuevos textos del historiador árabe Ibn Haiyan. Gracias a ellos sabemos que se llamaba Eneko Enékez o, lo que es lo mismo, Iñigo Iñíguez. La noticia cierta de que en 812 tenía una hija casada nos orienta para suponer que habría nacido hacia 780, o antes. El patronímico Enékez nos dice que era hijo de otro Eneko anterior. Sea lo que fuere, las tres fuentes, Rada, Ibn Haiyan y el Códice de Meyá o de Roda concuerdan en que fue el primer rey de los pamploneses.
